Culture Audits
A culture or climate audit is a comprehensive, qualitative assessment of the organizational culture. Members are
convened in groups of six to eight and are asked a predetermined list of questions, for example:
- What does your team do well?
- How are you effective as a team?
- What are the barriers to effectiveness?
- Who leads the team? Who follows?
The data are organized according to themes that naturally emerge from member responses. To ensure confidentiality,
no names or identifiers are used. Instead processes or metaphors are devised to communicate meanings (red-headed step
child; privileged group). The themes are analyzed to determine the nature of the organizational climate, for example,
are members satisfied, empowered, frustrated, challenged, have cliques formed, is morale low, etc. The nature of the
organizational climate shapes subsequent steps or interventions to more the culture change forward.
